Small cap blend is the subset of stocks that covers smaller listed companies in any given market. It is a good option for expanding beyond large cap exposure.

Definition

The Portfolio Charts small cap blend data tracks the smallest 85th through 98th percentile of a given market sorted by capitalization. The last 2% is generally considered micro caps and is excluded.
Some index providers define small cap blend using a company count instead of market percentages. Because of the way both methods are based on historical standards in the data, they should still be in the same ballpark.
“Blend” is a short way to say that the index blends together both growth and value stocks. It represents the full small cap segment of a given market with no additional filters applied.
Note that some sources complain that certain small cap funds contain too many mid cap companies. That perception comes from a combination of varying definitions of what “small cap” means and trading bands used by real-world funds to prevent unnecessary trading costs as companies grow and shrink at the border of large caps. The PC data reflects practical real-world data and not theoretically “ideal” definitions.
